Chile set new standard for camaraderie

Like millions around the world, I could not take my eyes away from the TV screen as all the news networks broke away from their normal programming to broadcast the miraculous rescue of the 33miners who had been trapped in a gold and copper mine in Chile’s northern Atacama desert. We were all transfixed to the screen as we watched the extraction of each miner from the solid stone cell 625 meters below the surface of the San Jose mine near the northern Chilean city of Copiapo, 800kilo-meters north of the capital city Santiago. Sepulvega gave one of the best quotes from the rescue when in an inter-view he said: “I have been with the Devil and I have been with God, but I held on to the hand of God.” At about 10.30.a.m. I tweeted, “The Chile Miner rescue story is the best story of the year as it fills me with hope and joy,” and I got some responses that I did not expect. Then there was Ariel Ticona, whose wife Elizabeth Segovia gave birth to a baby girl on Sept. 14-40 days into the miners’ or – deal. All these exchanges were captured live on TV for the whole world to see.
